A journalist and translator by profession, I am interested in middle eastern and South Asian politics — especially Indian Muslims — history, media, culture and religion.
I hold an LL.B. Honours degree from Aligarh Muslim University, India and M.A. in International Journalism from City University, London.
Based in London since 1983, I come from the historic town of Deoband, India.
I have worked for Impact International, a respectable current affairs Muslim magazine of its time, Islington Council, Radio Asia, Transport for London, Age U.K. and Iqra TV. As a freelance translator, I have worked for several agencies, including the BBC and Channel4. I have served as an elected parent governor twice in two primary schools.
In addition to contributing to various publications in Urdu and English and editing newsletters, I have also been running Urdu Media Monitor, a non-profit site offering English translations of selected news items and articles from the Urdu press on issues deliberately ignored by mainstream media.
پیشے سے میں ایک صحافی اور مترجم ہوں۔ سیاست، تاریخ، ثقافت اورمذہب میں میری گہری دلچسپی ہے۔ میں نے علیگڑھ مسلم یونیورسٹی سے ایل ایل بی آنرزاور سٹی یونیورسٹی، لندن، سے انٹرنیشنل جرنلزم میں ایم اے کی ڈگریاں حاصل کیں۔
میرا تعلق ہندوستان کے تاریخی شہر دیوبند سے ہے اور1983 سے لندن میں مقیم ہوں۔ اپنے وقت کے معروف مسلم جریدے امپیکٹ انٹرنیشنل، ازلنگٹن کونسل، ریڈیو اشیا، ٹرانسپورٹ فارلندن، ایج یو کےاور اقراء ٹی وی میں کام کرچکا ہوں۔ بحیثیت فری لانس ٹرانسلیٹر میں بی بی سی ٹیلی ویژن اور چینل4 سمیت مختلف اداروں کے لئے کام کرچکا ہوں۔ اس کے علاوہ دومرتبہ منتخب اسکول گورنررہ چکا ہوں۔
مختلف اخبارات اور ویب ساٗٹس پرانگریزی اوراردو زبانوں میں مضامین لکھنےاورمتعدد خبرناموں کی ادارت کرنے کے علاوہ میں اردو میڈیا مانیٹرکی ادارت بھی کرتا ہوں جس کا مقصد اردومیڈیا میں شائع ہونے والے ایسی خبروں اور مضامین کا انگریزی زبان میں ترجمہ پیش کرنا ہے جنہیں مین اسٹریم میڈیا نے نظراندازکردیا ہو۔
